Insulation Consultancy & Field Supervision

Even the most rigorously prepared technical specification loses its value if it goes unsupervised on site. ERATHERM's independent insulation consultancy builds an impartial technical bridge between contractor, client and project management — preventing CUI risk, application errors and energy losses at source. From refineries and nuclear facilities to defence industry and LNG systems — backed by field-earned engineering.

Thermal Insulation Engineering Services | Insulation Consultancy & Field Supervision

The weakest link in industrial facility insulation systems most often emerges not at the design stage, but during the application process. Incorrect material installation, faulty detail execution, uninspected cladding joints and unmonitored expansion points — each of these can translate into CUI (Corrosion Under Insulation), condensation damage and unexpected shutdown costs further down the line.

ERATHERM's Insulation Consultancy and Field Supervision service manages this risk at source. By combining the perspective shaped by over 1 million m² of field application experience with our academic engineering infrastructure, we provide technical assurance at every step of your project — from design through to commissioning. Because we know: every application detail left unsupervised on site eventually becomes a compounding cost item.

Why Independent Insulation Consultancy?

On large-scale industrial projects, insulation sub-contractors typically work under time and cost pressure. This pressure can result in even the most carefully prepared technical specifications not being fully implemented on site. An independent insulation consultancy service builds an impartial technical bridge between contractor, client and project management — answering the following questions:

Does the installed insulation system correspond precisely to the technical specification? Is the selected material the correct choice for the actual site conditions and process temperature range? Do the cladding joints meet the required standard for water-tightness and mechanical resistance? Are expansion points installed at the locations and to the detail specified in the thermal expansion calculations? In high CUI risk areas, are vapour barriers and drainage points complete and correctly installed?

Having these questions answered on site, in real time, adds significant value to the project — both today and throughout the operational life of the facility.

Support Structure & Expansion Analysis

Integrated sizing of insulation support rings, anchor points and expansion compensators with thermal expansion calculations. An engineering approach that reduces post-installation expansion-related damage to zero.

Technical Documentation & Specification Preparation

Application detail drawings (shop drawings), material specifications, quantity take-off lists, thermal calculation reports and quality control procedures. A complete technical package serving as the reference source for tendering, engineering reviews and future maintenance.

Field Supervision & Consultancy

Calculation of surface temperature limits under EN 563 standard and selection of the appropriate insulation thickness–material combination to ensure touch safety. Engineering supervision and technical consultancy throughout the field application process.

Our Consultancy & Field Supervision Scope

1. Pre-Job Engineering Review
The most valuable point of intervention in an insulation project is before site application begins. ERATHERM independently reviews your project's technical documents and delivers the following assessments:

Technical Specification Analysis: We audit the prepared insulation specification for compliance with ASTM, EN ISO, CINI and NACE standards — and where deficiencies or errors are identified, we submit revision recommendations.

Material Selection Verification: We assess whether the proposed material is the correct selection in terms of process temperature, chemical environment, moisture conditions and long-term performance criteria.

Method Statement Review: We technically review the contractor's proposed installation methodology — verifying its suitability in terms of CUI risk management, expansion management and cladding detail — and either approve it or raise a revision request.

ITP (Inspection & Test Plan) Preparation and Approval: We establish the inspection plan defining at which stages and against which parameters quality control will be carried out on site — or we review and audit an existing ITP.

2. Field Supervision & Inspection

Field supervision carried out during the application process is the most direct means of assuring insulation quality. Within the scope of ERATHERM's field supervision service:

Material Delivery Inspection: We verify whether insulation materials arriving on site correspond to the specification, check storage conditions and assess for damage. Any use of materials outside the Approved Material List is identified and reported.

Application Phase Inspection: We carry out on-site verification of whether insulation is being applied correctly layer by layer — checking weld pin spacing, wire mesh installation, aluminium cladding lap distances, screw spacing and weather-sealing tapes. We verify whether expansion gaps, support points and cladding drainage holes correspond to the technical drawings.

CUI Risk Zone Focused Inspection: For systems operating in the 60–120°C range, exposed to the external environment or subject to periodic wetting, we specifically monitor CUI risk points — inspecting cladding seams, flange cover details and insulation termination points for standard compliance.

Photographic Field Report: Following each inspection visit, we prepare a detailed Field Inspection Report (FIR) documenting deficiencies, non-conformances and required corrective actions. Every non-conformance identified is recorded via a Non-Conformance Report (NCR) and its closure is tracked.

3. Thermographic Energy Audit

The most effective method of making the performance of an existing insulation system visible is thermographic (infrared camera) survey. Within the scope of ERATHERM's thermographic energy audit service for industrial facilities:

We identify areas of heat loss and insulation damage. We produce a surface temperature distribution map, compare it against calculated values and report deviations. For identified damaged areas, we provide a prioritised repair plan and estimated energy recovery calculation. The thermographic survey report serves as a reference document for both maintenance planning and insurance and regulatory compliance requirements.

4. Post-Commissioning Assessment

The assessment carried out following commissioning of the insulation system verifies whether the system is achieving its design values. Within this scope:

We take surface temperature measurements and compare them against calculated design values. At identified deviation points, we carry out root cause analysis and submit corrective action recommendations. We document damage arising within the warranty period and prepare a technically substantiated Defect Report. We provide a periodic inspection programme recommendation to monitor the long-term performance of the system.

5. Independent Technical Advisory

On some projects, the client requires a technical opinion independent of both the contractor and project management. Within this scope, ERATHERM provides:

Technical Reporting for Dispute Resolution: Where a technical dispute exists between contractor and client, we prepare an independent engineering assessment and technical report.

Damage Assessment & Root Cause Analysis: We technically identify and document the cause of damage in an existing insulation system — whether CUI, thermal expansion, incorrect material selection or faulty application.

Tender Advisory: On behalf of the investor, we provide technical specification preparation, bid evaluation and technical competency audit services for insulation tenders.

Training & Technical Knowledge Transfer: We deliver technical training programmes for your facility's engineering and maintenance teams on CUI management, insulation system selection and field inspection competency.
