Insulation Quality Cannot Be Verified at the Final Walkdown Alone

Many critical insulation defects disappear from view as soon as the next layer or metal cladding is installed. Incorrect material, insufficient thickness, aligned joints, uncontrolled blanket compression, incomplete vapour retarders, poorly formed vapour stops and unsealed support details may remain hidden until heat loss, condensation, icing, water ingress or premature deterioration becomes visible in service.

Effective inspection therefore follows the construction sequence. Documents and materials are checked before installation; the substrate is released before concealment; each critical layer is inspected at the approved hold, witness or surveillance point; and nonconformities are closed before the next stage.

Materials are verified before they enter the work front, preventing unapproved or damaged products from being concealed within the completed system.

Inspection Where a Small Discontinuity Can Affect the Entire System

In cold and cryogenic service, moisture is driven toward the cold surface through every unsealed seam, penetration or damaged termination. Water vapour may condense or freeze inside the insulation, increasing heat gain and contributing to external condensation, icing, process instability or material degradation.

ERATHERM inspection plans therefore include layer staggering, vapour-retarder continuity, vapour stops, contraction details, sealed penetrations, load-bearing insulation at supports and compatible weather protection. Critical details are inspected before they become inaccessible.

Post-start-up screening can help identify cold spots or condensation, but it does not replace documented layer-by-layer inspection during construction.

After commissioning

Thermography and Performance Verification

Infrared thermography may be used after stable operation as a screening and comparative verification tool. It can help prioritise hot spots, cold spots, suspected missing insulation, thermal bridges or areas requiring closer investigation and can compare conditions before and after repair.

Results are influenced by cladding emissivity, reflected radiation, viewing angle, process load, wind, solar exposure and ambient temperature. Thermography is therefore interpreted alongside operating data, visual inspection, construction records and the limitations of the measurement method.

Important: Thermography supports post-commissioning screening and performance verification; it is not a substitute for installation-stage inspection and does not directly prove the presence or absence of hidden CUI.

What does an industrial insulation inspection service include?
The scope can include document and ITP review, material receiving inspection, pre-insulation release, installation-stage checks, hold and witness points, NCR and punch management, final walkdown, optional thermographic screening and quality-dossier close-out.
What is the difference between QA/QC and third-party inspection?
QA/QC is the quality planning, control and record system used by the party executing or managing the work. Third-party inspection is a separately appointed inspection scope with project-defined independence. When ERATHERM supplies or installs the inspected system, its inspection is identified as internal or contractor QA/QC rather than independent TPI.
Why must insulation be inspected before cladding is installed?
Cladding conceals material identity, layer arrangement, thickness, joint fit, compression, vapour-retarder continuity and many support or penetration details. Inspection before concealment preserves objective evidence and allows defects to be corrected without dismantling completed work.
What are hold and witness points in an insulation ITP?
At a hold point, work may not proceed until the required inspection and release are completed. At a witness point, the designated party is notified and given the opportunity to attend; the approved ITP defines whether work may proceed if that party does not attend.
What is checked during material receiving inspection?
Typical checks include approved product identity, grade, batch or lot, certificates, dimensions, nominal thickness, facing, physical damage, wet material, storage condition and the shelf life of coatings, mastics, sealants and adhesives.
What is different about cryogenic insulation QA/QC?
Cold and cryogenic inspection adds rigorous checks for vapour-retarder continuity, sealed penetrations, vapour stops, staggered multilayer joints, contraction allowances, load-bearing supports, weather protection and post-start-up condensation or cold spots.
Can thermography replace insulation installation inspection?
No. Thermography can screen for thermal anomalies after stable operation, but results are affected by emissivity, reflections, process load, wind and ambient conditions. It complements rather than replaces layer-by-layer installation inspection and does not directly prove hidden CUI.
Does ERATHERM issue accredited third-party inspection certificates?
Accredited inspection-body certification is not assumed by this service page. If a contract requires accreditation to ISO/IEC 17020 or another scheme, the required inspection type, accreditation body and authorised scope must be verified and agreed before appointment.
Can ERATHERM support both new construction and turnaround projects?
Yes. Inspection and QA/QC scopes can be structured for new-build installation, retrofit, maintenance, shutdown and turnaround work, with inspection frequency and reporting adapted to work-front volume, concealment risk and schedule.
